A graduate of the Saint Bonaventure class of 2000, Tucker earned 6 Varsity letters in 2 sports during his tenure as a Seraph. During his Junior year, Tucker rotated between all Defensive line positions while earning All Tri-Valley and All Ventura County League Honors on the field. During his senior football campaign, as the Varsity Captain for the Seraph’s first undefeated football season in 1999, Tucker anchored one of Saint Bonaventure’s most renowned defenses pinning their Tri-Valley league opponents to a then record 10 points for the entire season. Following the 1999 undefeated Season, Tucker was named All-Tri Valley League, All Ventura County, All CIF Player of the year, All-State as well as a Los Angeles Times Defensive All-Star. During the Spring, Tucker spent an exceptional amount of time on the mound for the Seraphs baseball team; as Captain senior year, he worked to a 9-1 record his during the Seraphs 3rd consecutive race to the CIF Semi-Finals.
Following a very successful athletic and academic career at Saint Bonaventure, Tucker accepted an appointment from Congressman Elton Gallegly to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Continuing to play football, Tucker was moved to the Offensive Line of Paul Johnson’s triple option during a transitional period of the US Naval Academy Football program. His Senior year marked one of the most remarkable turnarounds in College football history, sending the Midshipmen to meet President George W. Bush following their first Commander and Chief Trophy, (beating both Army and Air Force), in 8 years. Additionally the Midshipmen attended the 2003 Houston Bowl against Texas Tech University, the Midshipmen’s first bowl game since 1996. – Of significance: Tucker BEAT ARMY 3 out of 4 years on the football field! (Which is all that really matters)
One small stint as an assistant Offensive coach in 2004 at the Naval Academy concluded Tucker’s career in football. His career as a Naval Officer included a tour aboard USS COWPENS (CG-63) in Yokosuka Japan as the First Lieutenant; a tour with the US Army Special Forces in the Philippines, and a tour to Guam as the Officer in charge of a US Navy Security Detachment which would eventually take him to Kuwait where he would meet his beautiful wife Meakin, (also a US Naval Academy Graduate and Varity Athlete, Class of 2005). Tucker’s experiences in the Navy took him to over 25 countries and US territories, exposing him to some of the most important leadership and professional experiences possible – Following a short Tour in San Diego, Tucker finished his Naval career in 2009 and now works as a Management Consultant for Deloitte in Washington DC.

Arguably one of the best basketball players ever t suit up for the Green and Gold. Class of 1977 alum Bob Rostohar was surely the greatest scorer to play for the Seraphs. Over the course of 3 varsity seasons, Rostohar put in 1228 points in only 62 games for an average just a touch below 20 points per game (19.8 avg). This came in an era before the 3 point shot, one can only guess how many more points would have been scored by this scoring machine. In his Junior season, Bob kissed the twine for 515 points in 22 games for a school record average of 23.4 points a game. He earned All TVL and All-CIFSS 1st team honors becoming the first Seraph hoopster to be so honored. Facing defenses that were geared to stop the “machine” Rostohar put on an even more astonishing offensive display his senior season scoring 576 points in only 21 games for a sizzling 27.4 per game average and a new Seraph school record. He was a repeat All TVL and All-CIF 1st team selection. The back-to-back All-CIF selections have never been accomplished by a Seraph cager. Rostohar wasn’t just a one dimensional gunslinger as he also the SBH S all-time career rebounder with an even 800 in his 62 games for a 12.9 average. He averaged an unheard of 16.0 rebounds per game as a junior and almost matched it at 15.7 as a senior.
After graduating from SBHS, he attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID on a basketball scholarship. Bob did not play much but did make the travel squad, and was able to practice against 2 future NBA players. It was a great and very humbling experience that made him take his education much more seriously. He played for two seasons having torn up his left knee and lost a step he could not afford to loose.
He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1981, with a BS in Business Marketing.
“My 4 years at SBHS were some of the best of my life. I was provided an excellent
education, made some great friends, and built a foundation based upon strong morals
and values that serves me today. Thanks you St. Bonnie” - Bob Rostohar

Coach Dave Currey came to St. Bonaventure in the spring of 1967 as the new Athletic Director and Football coach. He was to bring the Seraphs into Tri Valley League following the school’s inaugural season as a free lance school. In 1968, his second year at SBHS, Coach Currey guided the Seraph football team to the “A” CIF Championship. This was the first championship of any type for SBHS and it was achieved in just the third year in which the school competed in organized sports. The following year, Coach Currey led the Seraphs to ten consecutive wins and a Tri Valley League Championship before bowing out in CIF semi-final game.
In addition to being Athletic Director and Head Football coach, he taught Civics, Physical Education, and Driver’s Education. He built a strong booster program and he contributed greatly to the school’s fundraising efforts. He has stated that leaving SBHS was not an easy decision because he valued so highly the feeling of community and the sense of commitment which existed at the school.
Coach Currey left St. Bonaventure in 1970 to become an assistant coach at Stanford University. He served on the staff of heralded coach John Ralston. During this time Stanford won the 1971 and 1972 Rose Bowls led by Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Jim Plunkett.
Coach Currey moved on from Stanford to become an NCAA Division I head coach at Long Beach State University (1977-84) and the University of Cincinnati (1984-89). Soon after his appointment the university began to shift gears and he was asked to oversee and support the program’s transition to the Division III level. Since the school’s inter-division move in 1994, the Panthers have expanded to 18 intercollegiate athletic teams including the revival of football after a 62 year absence.

Bill Little came to Saint Bonaventure in 1967. He taught Biology and coached Football, Basketball and Baseball. Bill was greatly influenced by his high school football coach, Ray Solari. “We were taught by example to play for the prize – the CIF Championship”.
Bill was the offensive and defensive line coach on the 1968 CIF Football team at Saint Bonaventure. He prided himself in coaching his players to nail the “get off” (line of scrimmage). He believed and taught that the team could gain 5 yards from the line of scrimmage on the “get off” alone. He was very proud of his lineman, Tom Franz, who smacked the quarterback so hard that the ball popped out and another lineman, Jerry Stone, scooped up the ball and scored the winning touchdown in the CIF Championship game.
Coach Little was the Varsity Baseball coach for 4 years at Saint Bonaventure. He dreamed of a CIF Baseball Championship from day one. His players have memories of running and batting practice after games were played. There were some Saturday practices and fines for mental errors – all to instill the values of striving for excellence on the field, not making mistakes and the challenge of being a champion. This paid off with Tri Valley League Championships in 1970 and 1971. And with Jerry Stone, 1970 AA CIF player of the year, leading the way Saint Bonaventure swept through the playoffs winning the championship - the only Team in Ventura to win a CIF championship in Baseball.
Coach Bill Little feels very fortunate and honored to be inducted to the Saint Bonaventure High School hall of fame and gives credit to the players who fully “bought into the program”. They did everything we asked of them, and more. “My experience at Saint Bonaventure is the high-light of my coaching career and one of the high-lights of my life”.
Bill is currently teaching Life Science at Grace Classical Academy. He lives in San Clemente with his wife, Cherie.

Tom Luna, St.Bonaventure's first varsity football backfield coach was hired by Father Thomas Meskill. Coach Luna was highly recommended for the position by former PAC-10 player, Al Torres, Oregon State University, a good friend of Father Meskill.
As a player, Tom Luna, had a brilliant career on championship teams at Oxnard High School, San Bernardino Valley College, military "Army" football, and semi-pro for one season.
St.Bonaventures first varsity football season was dismal. After the season, Father Meskill discussed with Coach Luna his interest in a coach at St.Francis High in South Pasadena. After a few phone calls and interviews, Father Meskill hired Dave Currey and Bill Little. In the Spring of 1967, Coach Currey, Little and Luna began a journey to a CIF Championship.
Coach Currey began molding his two coaches into a disciplined - unified staff. This staff unity and discipline would be reflected on the football team. In two years St. Bonaventure won the 1968 CIF Football Championship.(In 1969 League Champs, and CIF Semifinals).
On that December night in 1968 - The coaches and players will forever be remembered as the media described "JUST CALL THEM CHAMPS."
Coach Currey and his staff firmly established a football tradition at St. Bonaventure-PRIDE-POISE-PERFECTION.
Today these "terms" flow through every sports program at St.Bonaventure.
In time Currey, Little and Luna went on to other schools. Coach Currey at Stanford University. Coach Little, Rio Mesa High. Coach Luna to Oxnard High School, and Yreka High School (1987 CIF Northern Division Championship).
Coach Luna lives in Chesapeake, Virginia, with his wife Suzanne.

Pride, Poise, Perfection. Words that have resonated in the halls and campus of St. Bonaventure High School for many years and with good reason. This small school located in the heart of Ventura has built a reputation arch by arch, earned its glory yard by yard, and developed a sound tradition, year by year. The school proliferated in spite of all naysayers.
In the athletic years of 1967-1972 some terrific dedicated athletes and coaches passed through thee locker room of sports at SBHS leaving their accomplishments firmly entrenched in the history and lore of the school. You have heard the hallowed named of Ben Herrera, Jerry Stone, Tony Luna, Mark Stephenson, Larry Montag. The pennants that hang in the gym signify the early football and baseball championships that these names wrought.
Accomplishments no other school in Ventura had achieved in that time. Their initial pride, poise and perfection is still a source of inspiration for the current athletes at St. Bonaventure and will continue on for many more years.
However there is one individual that is sadly overlooked in the history of St. Bonaventure, sports and otherwise. This person never gained a yard. Never made a tackle. Never got a base hit. Never ran a sprint. Never made a layup. He also never missed a practice. Never missed a game. He always arrived early for practice and always stayed late.
Robert Melhorn.
Officially Robert, lovingly nicknamed “Duck” was our recorder of statistics. But he was so much more. Physically unable to play sports due to a heart condition at birth Robert inspired all of us to be better than we actually were. His unbridled enthusiasm for our accomplishments was an awesome and important part of our championship teams. If all of us had his spirit, we never would have lost any game at any sport. Recently a bit of Robert’s past was brought to light by his brother Carl. At a 1968 CIF play-off game at Harvard, after Luna’s “Miracle Run,” Robert’s excitement got the better of him. He passed out and had to be taken via ambulance to a local hospital. Additionally during a 1968 football team 40 year reunion it was agreed by many that if we weren’t naïve 17 year old kids we would have disdained protocol and voted “Duck” MVP of the football championship team.
Most importantly, when Robert passed away years ago, his Green and Gold pride ran so deep he was laid to rest wearing his St. Bonaventure High School letterman’s jacket.
St. Bonaventure spirit? I dare you to find a better role model for school spirit. Robert “Duck” Melhorn, without a doubt, is the epitome of what a Hall of Fame member should be. Pride, Poise, Perfection. Robert held all three to the highest standard.
The above is reprinted from the nomination letter sent in by Hall of Fame Member Tom Van Gundy. One of the many letters sent in on behalf of Robert “Duck” Melhorn.

Growing up, Mike Miller lived just three blocks east of Saint Bonaventure High School, so following his brother as a Seraph was a foregone conclusion. Even during his grade school years at Assumption, Mike closely followed the Seraphs. What was not clear at the time was that Mike would go on to become one of the most accomplished athletes to ever wear the forest green and gold.
Mike entered SBHS in the fall of 1971. During his four years at SBHS, he excelled as a member of the football and track & field teams. Mike was a truly gifted athlete who possessed both great agility and uncommon speed. In football, Mike starred as a wide receiver and kick return specialist. From his freshman year on, opposing defensive backs quickly learned it was a major mistake to let Mike get a step on them because they would never catch him in the open field. His one handed catch of a punt and return for an 80 yard touchdown against Bishop Diego was a true highlight reel candidate. Following his senior year of football, Mike was named first team all-league and first team all-CIF as a wide receiver. Though Mike’s accomplishments on the football field are truly noteworthy, it was as a track and field athlete that he made his major contributions to the Seraph sports legacy.
Mike earned a varsity letter in track and field in each of the four years he attended SBHS. During his freshman year, Mike was a standout as a sprinter. In this regard he was following the path blazed by older brother, Pat (`71), who had been an accomplished sprinter when he attended SBHS. Mike competed in all the sprint events and he even ran middle distance races at times. It was as a sophomore that Mike burst onto the track scene.
As Mike tells the story, one day he was leaving the football field after a physical education class. Jim Bauer, the track coach at the time, asked Mike to remain behind. Coach Bauer directed Mike to run over a flight of low hurdles on the track. This was something Mike had never tried before. When Mike crossed the finish line he turned and walked toward Coach Bauer who was glancing down at the stopwatch in his hand. Coach Bauer looked up and smiled. He then said: “Congratulations. You are now a hurdler.”
A few weeks later in his very first hurdle event as a sophomore, Mike broke the school record in the 120 yard high hurdles. This was an especially satisfying moment for Mike because the previous record had been held by Greg Dufresne (`71), who was a good friend and future groomsman in Mike’s wedding.
As a sophomore, Mike won most of the varsity hurdle, long jump, and sprint events he entered. Though he generally competed at the varsity level, at the end of the season he finished second in the CIF frosh/soph 120 yard low hurdles. At the time this was the highest finish ever by a SBHS track and field athlete.
During his junior and senior years, Mike was a dominating force on the local track scene. He was one of the fastest sprinters in Ventura County and he was among the best hurdlers in the state. At the Tri-Valley League finals in 1974 and 1975, Mike took first in both varsity hurdle events and the long jump. He was also a member of the winning 440 yard relay team. It is quite likely Mike could have won both varsity sprint events as well, but the rules limited each athlete to no more than four events. Mike was the first SBHS track athlete to ever finish first in four events at a league meet.
As a senior, Mike was the CIF ‘AA’ champion in the 330 yard low hurdles. Mike failed to qualify in his specialty, the 120 yard high hurdles, after he clipped the first few hurdles. Though he was disappointed and frustrated by his showing in the high hurdles, Mike went on to take first in the 220 yard dash. The victories in those two races marked the first time a Seraph athlete had ever won an individual CIF championship.
Mike went on to run at the CIF Masters Meet in the low hurdles and the 220 yard dash. He was disqualified in the 220 after stepping on the curbing on the inside of lane one but he finished third in the low hurdles and thus qualified for the CIF State Finals Meet. At the State Finals, Mike finished fourth in a photo finish in the 330 yard low hurdles. His time of 37.1 seconds in that race was the tenth fastest time in the nation for that season. Mike was the first Seraph to ever compete in the Masters Meet and the State Finals. It would be many years before another SBHS athlete would ascend to this premier level of competition.
Mike Miller was one of the most accomplished individual Seraph athletes during the early years of the school. He should also be considered one of the best athletes to ever represent SBHS. During his career, he set a great many school records in track and field and he still holds a number of those records.
Following high school, Mike graduated from California State University at Los Angeles. He has spent the last 30 years as a law enforcement officer for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and the Overland Park Police Department in Kansas. Mike resides in Overland Park with his wife, Patricia, and their three children, Kyle, Kaitlyn, and Christopher.

He moved on to Cal State Northridge where he received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Religious Studies with a minor in Classical History. He received his Masters from Mount St. Mary’s in Religious Studies.
He came to Saint Bonaventure in the summer of 1984 and served as a fulltime Religion teacher for 26 years. He was the ASB Moderator for 3 years, the Seraph Scrolls advisor for 20 years (1990-2010) and the Yearbook Advisor in 2010. He also served as Religious Department Chairperson for 17 years.
Coach Johnson began his coaching career at SBHS as the JV Head Baseball Coach before taking over the helm of the program in 1988. In his 14 years of leading the Varsity, his teams reached the CIF-SS Playoffs 13 times. He guided the Seraphs to the CIFSS Semi-finals four times (all consecutive from 1998-2001). He led the team to the CIFSS Quarterfinal another two times. His career was actually bookmarked by these runs as the Seraphs reached the Quarters during his first two seasons of coaching and he closed his career with the 4 consecutive Semi-Final appearances. He led the Seraphs to 5 Tri Valley League Championships. Coach Johnson retired with an overall record of 188-131-2. The 188 wins represent the most wins by any coach in school history in any sport. His teams were even better in league play winning at a 64% clip while providing 109 wins of his total. He was twice named TVL Coach of the Year (1989, 1994) and was named Ventura County Coach of the Year in 1999 by the L.A. Times and by the Ventura County Baseball Coaches Association.
Johnson also served the school’s athletic programs in other ways. He served as the home game announcer for Girls Volleyball and Girls Basketball for 24 years (1986-2010), Boys Basketball his last 11 years, and Varsity Baseball his last 7 years before retirement. In addition, he did the layout and Desktop Publishing of the Fall, Winter and Spring Sports books from 1988-2001 and provided the photography for the Sports Books from 1988 through June of 2010.
Coach Johnson lists his highlights as “too many to mention” in the three areas of coaching, announcing and the sports books; but overall states the major highlight is the “honor and privilege of working with young people, both as an educator and as a coach.” He goes on to say, “Any success I may have achieved is due to the efforts of these young student-athletes with whom I have been blessed to work. I could add that I particularly cherish the memory of the many players of seemingly average physical talents who never gave up on themselves, stayed positive, worked hard and excelled through sheer determination. I also wish to express my appreciation to the many parents, my fellow staff members and the assistant coaches who have aided me over the years in my various endeavors with athletics here at Saint Bonaventure.”
During the 2010 Baseball season, Coach Johnson was honored by having his uniform # 22 retired from the Seraph Baseball program, the first time this honor has been bestowed upon a member of the baseball program. Genevieve and Jim have been supporters of Saint Bonaventure High School since 1970 when their son Steve entered the school. Their daughter Michelle followed a few years later and graduated in 1977. The family tradition has continued with their grandchildren (Nicole ‘02, Steve ‘05 and Andrea ‘08) attending the school.
Since the school’s very first Fiesta, Genevieve and Jim have been generous supporters of the school’s academic and athletic programs. Without their constant encouragement our fundraisers would not be as successful as they are.
Student-athletes from the early 1970’s fondly remember Jim being on the sidelines to say hello or give a high-five as they left the field after practice each day. Today’s athletes can look in the stands and see the Basso and Hagemann families cheering on the Seraphs at many events throughout the year.

Paula and Ev quickly became a vital part of the Saint Bonaventure community in 1968 when their first of three sons enrolled at Saint Bonaventure. They joined the Booster Club and PTG Club and the next thing you know, Ev is behind the camera filming every football game for the coaches. This “2nd” career lasted 18 years!
After the wild 1968 football season ended Fr. Meskil approached Paula and Ev and asked them to start up a bingo program at the school. Gambling in California was illegal so they had a private meeting with the Chief of Police… and so the “The Social Club” began. They played twice a week and held special events throughout the year having over 400 people show up to play.
Paula and Ev have worked closely with Vi and Bob Parada over the years to make bingo a very successful venture for the school. The list of items bingo provided for Saint Bonaventure is too numerous to list but suffice it to say, we wouldn’t be nearly the campus that we are without the hard work and support of bingo and the Bruers.

Vi & Bob Parada are natives of Ventura and have been married for 57 years. They raised four daughters; Patsy, Roberta, Kathy and Christine, the youngest of which attended Saint Bonaventure High School.
Vi & Bob have been active supporters of the school since 1968. They can recall a time when the football team had no more than 20 players as opposed to the State Championship team they hold today! In support of Saint Bonaventure they began running bingo under the direction of Principals; Father Tom Meskil, Brother Hillarian O’Conner, Brother Tom Fahey, and Brother Paulinus Horkan.
Their daughter Christine sent her two children, Gilbert and Andrea, to Saint Bonaventure. Gilbert played varsity baseball for four years, graduating in 2001 and went on to play at Fresno State where he graduated from in 2005 (Gilbert was inducted into the SBHS Hall of Fame in 2009). Andrea played varsity soccer for four years and graduated in 2005.
Bingo fundraising was instrumental in the construction of the gym and baseball stadium. Without the continued support of Vi and Bob all these years, bingo would not have grown to be as successful as it is and the school would not have the funds to build and expand the campus facilities and classroom technology.
